A bright and luscious example of a Burgundian Chardonnay at an extremely competitive price point. From the region of Mâconnais in Southern Burgundy the vineyards here see a lot more sunshine than many of Burgundy’s northern counterparts with the continental climate resulting in wines that are bright, soft and approachable. With vineyards on the higher slopes of the Mont du Mâconnais the structure shines through in this wine where limestone prevalent soils help the grapes to retain their acidity while having the hang time to produce a multitude of flavour and aroma characteristics.
Head winemaker Samantha Bailey tastes up to 20 separate tanks before she starts the blending process for this wine with her focus being on combining three essential elements – the florals, the exotic and the mineral. The final blend is kept on fine lees until bottling and the resultant wine combines the warmth of southern Burgundy with the elegance and finesse of the special terroir of Mâcon-Charnay-lès-Mâcon.
Immediately appealing with good depth of flavour and wonderful length. The flavours beautifully unfold with this wine – think of freshly cut hay for the nose, crunchy greengages for the palate, and some candied peel / lemongrass for the final notes. The wine is medium bodied and unoaked so you are getting a very pure, authentic example of a Chardonnay from this famous and ultra-premium region of France.
Extremely versatile and can be enjoyed alone or with food. It is delicious alongside grilled meaty fish (locally they would use zander), chicken in cream sauce (poulet à la crème), asparagus & mushroom risotto, fish chowder or traditional roast chicken with all the trimmings.
